Ecommerce SEO Glossary
Plain-English definitions of the ecommerce SEO, AEO, GEO and AIO terms we use — from crawl budget and schema markup to AI Overviews and generative engine optimization.
- Ecommerce SEO
- Ecommerce SEO is the practice of optimizing an online store's technical foundation, category and product pages, and content so it ranks in organic search and earns qualified, purchase-ready traffic.
- Ecommerce SEO service
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)
- AEO is optimizing content so answer engines — featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat — can extract a direct, quotable answer. It relies on concise answer blocks, FAQ schema and clear question-led headings.
- GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)
- GEO is optimizing to be cited inside generative AI answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Entity clarity, source density and machine-readable manifests such as llms.txt drive citations.
- AIO (AI Overviews Optimization)
- AIO targets Google's AI Overviews specifically: structured data, authoritative first-party data, and passage-level answers that Google can lift into the generated summary above traditional results.
- Schema markup
- Schema markup is JSON-LD structured data that tells search and AI engines what a page is about. Ecommerce stores rely on Product, Offer, Review, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and LocalBusiness types.
- Merchant listing
- A merchant listing is a Google rich result for a purchasable item. It requires price, currency, availability, shipping details and a return policy inside the Offer schema to validate without errors.
- Crawl budget
- Crawl budget is the number of URLs a search engine will fetch from your store in a given period. Faceted navigation, thin variants and duplicate parameters waste it; a clean sitemap index preserves it.
- Canonical tag
- A canonical tag declares the preferred URL for a page so duplicate or parameterized versions consolidate their ranking signals into one address. Every page here self-references an absolute canonical.
- Hreflang
- Hreflang tells search engines which language and country version of a page to show. Multi-region ecommerce stores need a reciprocal hreflang cluster plus an x-default fallback.
- Sitemap index
- A sitemap index is a parent XML file that points to multiple child sitemaps, keeping each under the 50,000-URL and 50 MB limits while making large stores faster and cheaper to crawl.
- llms.txt
- llms.txt is a plain-text manifest at a site's root that summarizes its structure and key pages for large language models, improving how accurately AI systems describe and cite the brand.
- Core Web Vitals
- Core Web Vitals are Google's page-experience metrics — LCP for loading, INP for interactivity and CLS for visual stability. Weak vitals suppress ecommerce rankings and conversion rates together.
- Programmatic SEO
- Programmatic SEO generates large sets of genuinely useful pages from structured data — for example region, city and state landing pages — each with unique copy, schema and internal links.
- Ecommerce PPC
- Ecommerce PPC is paid search and shopping advertising for online stores. Paired with SEO it captures demand immediately while organic rankings compound.
